Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to revitalize Ghana’s struggling sports sector if given the mandate in the December 7 general elections.

Highlighting the decline in the country’s sports landscape under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, Mahama pointed to challenges faced by the Ghana Premier League, junior and senior national teams, and women’s national teams.

“The elephant has come and destroyed everything in this country. Today, even the Black Stars cannot score goals,” Mahama said during a campaign tour. He emphasized the nation’s fall from grace, noting the Black Stars’ consistent qualification for major tournaments over the past two decades, a feat now broken under President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia.

Under their leadership, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a winless qualifying campaign, marking the first time in 20 years Ghana will miss the continental tournament.

Mahama assured Ghanaians of his commitment to reorganize the sports sector, promising to restore the Black Stars to their former glory and reinvigorate the broader sports ecosystem.

The NDC is going to come and reorganize our sports so that we can lift the Black Stars again and restore them to their former glory,” he affirmed.

The NDC leader’s pledge comes amid growing public discontent over Ghana’s declining sports performance.
