Former Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has opened up on his infamous mistake against Italy at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

Kuffour’s back pass to Goalkeeper Laryea Kingston was intercepted by Italy’s Vincenzo Iaquinta in the 83rd minute culminating in a 2-0 win for the Azzurri.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM (Ghana), Kuffour revealed the unfortunate incident led to his retirement from the national team.

“I felt bad after the first game at the 2006 World Cup, but being dropped for the second time game opened the door for others. I played one of my best games against Italy, but that mistake after the tournament, I told management I couldn’t for the national team anymore”

The Black Stars progressed to the round 16 stage of the World Cup with impressive victories over Czech Republic and United States of America without Kuffour in the starting eleven. He recorded 59 caps for Ghana on the international stage.
